ExpressKey Remote stop working after a while...

Camille Bissuel
Hi dear Linuxwacom list,

I'm using an ExpressKey Remote under Antergos linux (Arch based), it usually works well, but since a few days, I'm experimenting a strange behavior : the ExpressKey stop working after a while... not responding at all until reboot. So I can reboot or use the keyboard...

The only log I can found is from systemd (journalctl -p err) and the error I get is :
févr. 06 18:14:16 nylnook-home kernel: wacom 0003:056A:0331.0006: cannot create sysfs group err: -17
(repeated 24 times)

my packages :
linux 4.9.7-1
libwacom 0.22
xf86-input-wacom 0.34
drawing with Krita 3.1.2...

Is there something I can do ? should I downgrade my kernel ?

While I'm at it, can I ask you an update on the gnome configuration panel with the Express Key remote if you know what the status is ? I believe you did some work in the linuxwacom team, but so far nothing appeared in Gnome and I'm still using my xsetwacom script (it's ok ;p).

And more curiosity... as you know, Wayland became the default display server in latest Gnome release, and I found that my stylus was detected but I can't draw with it yet... Can you share with us what is the plan on the LinuxWacom side ?

Thanks a lot for your work and answers !
My best wishes,
Camille Bissuel - nylnook.com

Hello Camille,

So that I make sure that I test the correct kernel driver, can you confirm you
haven't installed input-wacom.

Hi Camille,

I setup a system with Antergos, an EKR, and an Intuos Pro (1st gen). I
used the pad
some and then let the system run overnight. I was unable reproduce to
the "cannot create
sysfs group err: -17".  I did see in the logs this error:

I'm hoping that the suggestion I sent you off list to try resetting
the remote works for you. I've reproduced that suggestion at [1].

For the problem where the EKR stops working, this may be a Krita/QT
issue with having two pads. Which tablet/wacom display are you using
the EKR with?

Best,
Aaron

Re: ExpressKey Remote stop working after a while...

Camille Bissuel
Hi Aaron,

I finally reproduced the bug today, after your last release (my congrats BTW), but it's the game ;)

First of all, I wonder if it's not linked somehow with some random Xorg crash described in this bug : https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=99358, because it happened after such a crash. I removed my xf86-video-intel package before so it didn't happen with it (I have an Intel chip on my motherboard but I'm using an AMD Radeon R9 290 Card) and will downgrade my xorg package and I will see if the EKR bug continue.

Here are the logs you asked me off-list (done during the bug) :

Hi dear Linuxwacom list,

I setup a system with Antergos, an EKR, and an Intuos Pro (1st gen). I
used the pad

I'm hoping that the suggestion I sent you off list to try resetting
the remote works for you. I've reproduced that suggestion at [1].

For the problem where the EKR stops working, this may be a Krita/QT
issue with having two pads. Which tablet/wacom display are you using
the EKR with?

Best,
Aaron

[1] http://linuxwacom.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/ExpressKey_Remote

my packages :
linux 4.9.7-1
libwacom 0.22
xf86-input-wacom 0.34
drawing with Krita 3.1.2...

Is there something I can do ? should I downgrade my kernel ?

Hello Camille,

So that I make sure that I test the correct kernel driver, can you confirm
you
haven't installed input-wacom.

Aaron

While I'm at it, can I ask you an update on the gnome configuration panel
with the Express Key remote if you know what the status is ? I believe you
did some work in the linuxwacom team, but so far nothing appeared in Gnome
and I'm still using my xsetwacom script (it's ok ;p).

And more curiosity... as you know, Wayland became the default display server
in latest Gnome release, and I found that my stylus was detected but I can't
draw with it yet... Can you share with us what is the plan on the LinuxWacom
side ?

Thanks a lot for your work and answers !
My best wishes,
Camille Bissuel - nylnook.com

Re: ExpressKey Remote stop working after a while...

Camille Bissuel
Hi everyone,

I continued with a downgraded Xorg package (dowgraded form 1.19.1 to 1.19 to fix random crahses), and the EKR continue to stop working after a while. So it don't seem to be linked with this Xorg bug.

I checked the same logs than before, and interstingly they are different for journaltcl and evtest, and I was able to make it work again by unpairaing (in /sys directory) and pairing again + relauching my xsetwacom script without rebooting.

Here are the new logs :

I'm still curious about the graphical client for the EKR and the wacom-wayland work ;)

Thanks a lot for your work anyway !

Hi dear Linuxwacom list,

I'm using an ExpressKey Remote under Antergos linux (Arch based), it usually

So I can reboot or use the keyboard...

The only log I can found is from systemd (journalctl -p err) and the error I
get is :

Hi Camille,

I setup a system with Antergos, an EKR, and an Intuos Pro (1st gen). I
used the pad
some and then let the system run overnight. I was unable reproduce to
the "cannot create

Aaron Armstrong Skomra
Hi Camille,

Just wanted to respond to let you know that I'm still looking at this.
I haven't been able to reproduce, but while I was trying to, I found
another bug which was introduced since kernel 4.9 that also effects
the EKR. That might complicate the fix for your issue, but I'm still
working on both issues.

Thanks for the logs and the info, it's very helpful since I haven't
been able to reproduce the your bug yet.

Best,
Aaron

Re: ExpressKey Remote stop working after a while...

Camille Bissuel
Hi everyone, sorry for spamming too ...

another EKR stop this afternoon with Xorg 1.18, then I tried to restart the EKR directly with my xsetwacom script and it worked... but in a few seconds Xorg crashed...
And I was unable to reboot under Xorg (won't start)... it was working with wayland, but I can't use my tablet with wayland... after a lot a testing, the only way was to upgrade again to Xorg 1.19 to recover.

here is the journalctl -r -p err log...

If there is some wayland-wacom beta testing available somewhere, I'll happily try to get out of theses bugs suddenly happening after 2 years of a stable system.

Thanks again

Best,
Aaron

Hi everyone,

I continued with a downgraded Xorg package (dowgraded form 1.19.1 to 1.19 to
fix random crahses), and the EKR continue to stop working after a while. So
it don't seem to be linked with this Xorg bug.

I checked the same logs than before, and interstingly they are different for
journaltcl and evtest, and I was able to make it work again by unpairaing
(in /sys directory) and pairing again + relauching my xsetwacom script
without rebooting.

Here are the new logs :

Thanks again,

Hi Aaron,

I finally reproduced the bug today, after your last release (my congrats
BTW), but it's the game ;)

First of all, I wonder if it's not linked somehow with some random Xorg
crash described in this bug :
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=99358, because it happened
after such a crash. I removed my xf86-video-intel package before so it
didn't happen with it (I have an Intel chip on my motherboard but I'm using
an AMD Radeon R9 290 Card) and will downgrade my xorg package and I will see
if the EKR bug continue.

Here are the logs you asked me off-list (done during the bug) :

used the pad

Re: ExpressKey Remote stop working after a while...

Camille Bissuel
Hi everyone,,

after some continuing discussion with Aaron off-list, other bugs, several tests, package updates, this bug continue but is less annoying : now running my xsetwacom script again fix it until it happen again. it's happening times to times (usually minimum half an hour of use).
My current packages are linux 4.9.11 , xorg-server 1.19.2, libwacom 0.24, xf86-input-wacom compiled from git two days before the 0.34.2 release (to fix this bug, waiting for the official package), gnome-shell 3.22.3 and krita 3.1.2 under Antegos linux (Arch based) using a Cintiq 27

I also noticed that when the EKR stop working, the Art Pen stop rotating (the cursor is not rotating in krita) until I raise the pen to leave the detection and enter the detection again (since latest xorg-server version 1.19.2).
And from the day the EKR worked with the xsetwacom script, if I switch off the Cintiq 27 screen and let the computer run, I have to run the script again to make it work again after switching on... I supposed it was normal ;)

I will try to resume what we discover :
- It seems to happen only on the Cintiq 27 (can't reproduce on a Cintiq Companion 2 running Antergos too)
- it's not an USB port issue (I tried 3 of them several hours and days)
- journalctl is no more more complaining since latest xorg release, and evtest continue to see the EKR during the bug
- Aaron now thinks its not linked to the kernel

So it's probably a software issue with xsetwacom, or gnome, or X... but we need your lights, probably especially from Jason ;)

Many thanks, and my best regards,
Camille Bissuel - nylnook.com
