Intuos2 6x8 stylus problem

Brad Christensen
Hello all,

I have an Intuos2 6x8 USB tablet, a bit old but hardly used. Thanks to the linuxwacom project I can make use of it again, thank you devs!

My problem is with the stylus, as it does not accurately track on the tablet. Interestingly the eraser works perfectly and tracks very smoothly!

Initiating with the stylus, it does not track hovering above the tablet unless nearly touching the surface. The eraser tracks fine probably 1/2" above the surface. When the stylus does register, it is very jittery, jumping around the spot it should be by a small amount. Drawing a line, for instance in Krita (or simply accross the desktop for that matter), is very smooth when drawn with the eraser side of the pen. However, when drawn with the stylus tip, lines are "jerky", and diagonal lines are especially stair-stepped and sometimes broken. One can see the cursor hesitate and catch up when using the stylus.

The tablet is setup with auto configuration, seems to be detected fine, and I cannot see any problematic settings with xsetwacom (or any real differences between the stylus and eraser).

Since my eraser works great, I decided to see if I could see any differences between it and the stylus in evtest. The only thing I noticed was while hovering the stylus tip above the tablet, there are tons of 'type 4 (EV_MSC), code 0 (MSC_SERIAL), value 56629469' events each alone in their own SYN_REPORT. This does not happen when hovering the eraser, as other events are also included. I have no idea if this means anything of course.

I am at a loss as how to get my stylus working smoothly. Any ideas?

Thank you,
Brad

Which kernel are you running (issue "uname -a" to see the version)?
Did you update Wacom kernel driver yourself?

Re: Intuos2 6x8 stylus problem

Brad Christensen
hello ping,

Linux archbox 3.14.1-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Apr 14 20:40:47 CEST 2014 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I am using xf86-input-wacom 0.24.0-1 from Archlinux extra repository. Problem was the same with previous versions of both the driver and kernel.

Re: Intuos2 6x8 stylus problem

Ping Cheng-2
Hi Brad,

I connected an Intuos 2 6x8 on my Ubuntu 14.04 running latest kernel
driver from input-wacom and latest X driver from xf86-input-wacom. I
tested a classic pen and an Airbrush. Both work fine (with both pen
and eraser sides).

I feel the root cause of your issue can be either you have a failing
pen tip or you need to update Wacom driver on your system.

Cheers,

Ping

Re: Intuos2 6x8 stylus problem

Brad Christensen

Thank you for the testing Ping,

I just updated to kernel 3.14.6 but no luck. I am guessing the included wacom module is the latest, but I could not tell for sure as modinfo wacom included no version information.

I guess I will try to find a replacement pen and see if that helps.

Brad

Brad, on reading through your issue I'm wondering if you have the same
issue as I had on first installing the tablet.

On first use I only tested the drawing capability on one application,
The Gimp, and it would not write at all. I spent some time exploring why
this was so, the pen acted normally as a mouse but would not draw.
Eventually I installed another application, Xournal and found that the
pen would draw correctly. The Gimp was still drawing nothing. I then
tested Pinta and Libreoffice Draw and Dia, all of them fine.

I eventually solved the Gimp issue by completely uninstalling everything
related to the Gimp and reinstalling, then it worked. No clue as to what
setting was wrong. Moral of story, how many applications have you tried
and found the pen is not drawing?

Re: Intuos2 6x8 stylus problem

Brad Christensen

Hi all,

It's looks like it's a faulty hardware problem. I've tried the tablet on windows laptop and found it has the same problem, eraser tip track wonderfully but stylus tip is jerky / stair-steps / hangs what have you... This is a bummer as it was hardly used :(

I also opened up the pen to see if anything was broken inside as I've read people being able to glue things back together on broken bamboo pens.. but all looked fine.

Guess I'll have to make due with the eraser for now and try to find a replacement.

Thanks again for all help provided.
Brad
